Organise a work placement
Viva La Gong Festival is a Wollongong annual Arts & Community cultural event organised by this department under the umbrella of the local council. The event is always held locally. Their office is located at 81- 85 Burelli Street, Wollongong NSW 2500. Viva is committed to nurturing local artists, dancers, performers, singers, poets and authors.
The festival is a high profile, quality, arts and entertainment event that attracts cultural tourists to the city. In this way it benefits the local community. It is also a fabulous showcase for local arts and cultural projects by young and old. It reflects the talent and cultural diversity in the region. In many ways the vision of Viva la Gong is best understood as a celebration of Wollongong, its unique style and energy, the diversity of the community and the beauty and ruggedness of the landscape. Every year Viva la Gong develops a theme for the festival. This year the theme is going to be the “Spirit of Flight”.
My work placement was as part of the team promoting the event. I was been a volunteer. There are many volunteers and they are supervised by Paola Rodriguez. I found out about this work placement when Paola came to the TAFE campus at Wollongong and talked to our Communications and Media class. She asked the class if anyone wanted to volunteer for a combination of fun and work. Peter Bradbury, the class teacher had several forms and I used one of these forms to make an appointment to see her. I then had an interview with her in her office in Burelli Street. She said she would accept me as a volunteer. This was also the confirmation for this position.
